I’m Rebecca Weaver, a senior at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. This summer I had the chance to live and work in a food desert and had the privilege to work very close with people from the area who had lived in a food desert their whole lives.
I worked for Appalachia Service Project a group that spreads over many counties throughout rural Appalachia that are considered food deserts. I am currently working for the Minerva Area Food Pantry Council which is helping to aid those who are food insecure.
When I first heard the word “food desert”, I had no idea what people were talking about. But, after living and working in one and having the ability to live in a close community with others who were most affected by it, I was able to get a grasp on why it is so important for others to learn about food deserts and food insecurity as well.
Journey with me for a look beyond the numbers of what food insecurity look like.
